Digital Revolution
Anyone who has been to the top of the BT Tower in central London will know that it gives you a completely different perspective on the world. The streets and routes that you know like the back of your hand at ground level can be difficult to pick out from the 34th floor of the building
It can be tempting to look at digital technology in a similar way. Close up we take the products and services that are part of our everyday lives for granted. However, a different perspective can make you stop and realise that there are routes to help businesses, individuals and society as a whole, but they may not be that clear.
One of the key players in mapping out this future is the Reseach Councils UK www.rcuk.ac.uk
and they hosted an event at BT Tower to discuss these issues and showcase some of the latest research work as part of their Digital Economy programme.
The demonstrations ranged from how artifacts such as jewellery can be combined with mobile phone technology to help elderly people retain memories and share experiences with family and friends, through to a group of universities who are examining how we ca harness our digital footprints, capturing richer data about people’s behaviour to interact with the world around them.
Other projects include digital software that analysis music in great detail, transforming the way people study, compose, buy, archive and interact with it www.sonicvisualiser.org. Also a development of virtual reality technology by researchers at York and Warwick Universities that will bring all five senses to life.
