Get Involved in the big debate on Digital ContentFollowing last month’s launch of our Beacons for Innovation Report we have had a great response from people registering at the website to get involved in the Beacon Projects. The first two Beacons both share the theme of the future of digital content, how will people experience it and how will it be distributed. We will soon be announcing details of live events and online activities for people to get involved in what will be the UK’s big debate on digital content. This will include a major online survey that will be a key part of the baseline work and help us understand what people think about the future of digital media. Next month we will be taking part in two high profile events to promote the survey. The Technology Strategy Board’s Innovate 09 which takes place on October 13 and the prestigious Power to the Pixel event at which we will be hosting a breakfast briefing. Power to Pixel takes place on Oct 14 and 15 and the Creative Industries KTN breakfast will be on the second day. Work on the third Beacon Project, Knowledge Transfer is also progressing and we will announce details of activities in the near future. Meanwhile anyone interested in sparking a conversation can do so at the Creative Industries KTN website.

Prosthetics and Automatic Imagery Extraction17 June 2009The MoD has announced two new SBRI competitions that are due to open in July 2009. The first of these is looking for innovative research on Prosthetics, and opens on the 16th July with a seminar at Harwell. The MoD has a high obligation for duty of care to help retain personnel in-service and minimise disability on discharge. This call focuses on two specific areas of treatment research related to amputation and similar complex traumas. The first is the physiological and repair process and the second is functional restoration and retraining. These subjects cover a wide range of topics and will be of interest to a large spectrum of SMEs, academia and industries. Interested companies should register at www.science.mod.uk. The second competition is in the field of Automatic Imagery Extraction. This opens on the 23rd July, again with a briefing seminar at Harwell. Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance imagery systems generate huge volumes of data, ranging from high resolution digital images to full motion video and require a large amount of operator effort to fully analyse and exploit. The competition seeks automatic and semi-autonomous tools and techniques to ease the operator workload in processing and exploiting imagery data. New tools and techniques should address the full range of activities included image registration, cueing of targets of interest, feature extraction, recognition and identification of targets, archiving and retrieval of products.
