£5m Collaborative Metadata R&D Competition

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) has announced an exciting £5m collaborative R&D competition, Metadata: increasing the value of digital content.

The competition, launched on the 1st June, provides match-funding for projects which address three opportunities to build revenue streams with more efficient and innovative use of metadata. These tensions revolve around three core areas: interoperability of different sets of metadata, improving the search and discovery of metadata to help generate revenue and improving the linkage between metadata and the original content.

The competition is open to consortiums made up of two or more partners, with the lead being taken by a digital SME. Partners can be drawn from businesses large or small, academia, research and technology organisations, not for profit organisations, but the projects must be led by revenue earning business entity.

Applicants are required to collaborate in order to enter the competition and can pitch for projects of up to £100,000 as part of the fast-track stream, or for larger projects funds of up to £2-3m are available in the mainstream track.

Successful projects will receive a grant to cover up to 50% of total project costs, with the partners providing the balance in matched funding i.e. Applicants for fasttack project funding will be able to apply for a maximum £50k grant.
